SUICIDE

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the US
One in 4 young adults struggle with suicidal ideation

MOOD DISORDERS AND SUICIDE

"About one-half to two-thirds of all suicides are by people who suffer from mood disorders; preventing suicides among those who suffer from them is thus central for suicide prevention. Understanding factors underlying suicide risk is necessary for rational preventive decisions" (NCBI)

LGBTQIA AND SUICIDE

Queer youth are 5 times more likely to experience suicidal ideation. They are also more likely to face mental illness, bullying, harasment, assault, and homelessness. "LGBTQ youth who reported facing greater rejection, violence and discrimination also reported higher rates of suicide attempts" (NBC news)

BPD AND SUICIDE

"Self-injurious behavior includes suicide and suicide attempts, as well as self-harming behaviors, described below. As many as 80 percent of people with BPD have suicidal behaviors, and about 4 to 9 percent commit suicide" (SAVE)

EATING DISORDERS AND SUICIDE

"Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder. While studies have shown varying results, patients with eating disorders appear to be between 1.5 and 14 times more likely than same-aged peers to die. Mortality rates are the highest for patients with anorexia nervosa but are high for any person with an eating disorder" (Very Well Mind).

COVID AND SUICIDE

Due to the pandemic and quarantining restrictions, mental health has been on a surging decline. A loss of jobs, homes, and socialization has caused many negative effects on all. It is speculated that the increase of rates of suicide are linked with the death rate.

“Calls for mental and behavioral problems increased from just under 35,000 per week in the same time period for 2019 to almost 45,000 per week in 2020.” (Brookings)

BULLYING AND SUICIDE

"77% of the adolescents had experienced bullying, while 68.9% had suicide ideation at presentation. While controlling for age, gender, grade, psychiatric diagnosis, and abuse, a history of bullying was the most significant predictor of suicidal ideation. Individuals in this study who reported cyber bullying were 11.5 times more likely to have suicidal ideation documented on presentation, while individuals reporting verbal bullying were 8.4 times more likely" (NCBI)

ANXIETY AND SUICIDE

"Among individuals reporting a lifetime history of suicide attempt, over 70% had an anxiety disorder...Anxiety disorders, especially panic disorder and PTSD, are independently associated with suicide attempts. Clinicians need to assess suicidal behavior among patients presenting with anxiety problems" (NCBI)

INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE AND SUICIDE

"Here is a great deal of underlying and outright violence in intimate relationships, which is exacerbating the risk of suicide. This detailed coding schema guided abstractors to better identify intimate partner violence in suicides, which could be easily replicated" (NCBI)

CHRONIC ILLNESS AND SUICIDE

"Chronic pain patients are at elevated risk for suicide, but suicidality as an escape from persistent suffering is not the full picture. Chronic pain is comorbid with mental health conditions, in particular depression and personality disorders, which carries with it elevated risk for suicidality. The neural networks involved in chronic pain processing overlap those with depression" (Oatext).

NEURODIVERSITY AND SUICIDE

"Adults with ADHD have a higher risk compared to other adults, according to a national survey of suicide in the US; these risks increase if an individual has a comorbid diagnosis of depression and conduct disorder.* While there is less research on children and adolescents with ADHD, the research indicates that early adolescents aged 11–14 years old are at greater risk than those in late adolescence, and males with ADHD are at greater risk of death by suicide(CHADD)

PRISON AND SUICIDE

"Justice-involved patients often have histories of trauma. Trauma is a risk factor for suicide. According to the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, about 4% of men and 10% of women in the United States will develop PTSD sometime in their lives, while approximately 6% of male inmates and 21% of female inmates meet criteria for PSTD. An even larger number of incarcerated individuals have been exposed to traumatic events, including domestic violence, neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, assault, sexual abuse, and sexual assault" (NCCHC)

SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND SUICIDE

"According to multiple studies, over 50% of suicides are associated with dependence on drugs and alcohol, and at least 25% of people with alcohol or drug addiction commit suicide. Additionally, more than 70% of adolescent suicides are associated with drug and alcohol use and dependence" (Socal Sunrise).

PTSD AND SUICIDE

"People with a diagnosis of PTSD are also at greater risk to attempt suicide. Among people who have had a diagnosis of PTSD at some point in their lifetime, approximately 27% have also attempted suicide. Another large-scale survey found that 24% of military personnel diagnosed with PTSD had experienced suicidal thinking within the past year"(Very Well Mind)

SCHIZOPHRENIA AND SUICIDE

"It has long been known that persons with schizophrenia are at high risk for attempted and completed suicide. With estimates of about 5% to 15% for completed suicide1,2 and 20% to 40% for attempted suicide,3-6 the recent increase in attention to this concern is promising" (Psychiatry Times).

CISGENDERS AND SUICICE

"Official statistics and research studies have found that there are a number of gender differences in suicide. These differences are known as the gender paradox of suicide. While women are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts, for example, men are much more likely to take their own lives" (Verywellmind)

"In countries around the world, women are more likely to be diagnosed with depression and to attempt suicide. So why is the male suicide rate still several times higher than female?" (BBC)
